My Proposal
My interpretation of “incarceration and freedom of
expression” is that every person; regardless of gender, race, age or sexuality,
has the same right to express themselves freely without the fear of persecution.
I feel that in many cultures of our world today there is still prejudice
against certain people. For example, in India women are unlikely to ever win a
trial against a man who raped them due to the fact they are a woman and that
they somehow provoked the man, which leaves the woman in a position of
powerlessness and shame. In other cultures gay and transsexual men are still prosecuted
and shunned from society and in Jamaica they are stoned if they are seen on the
streets. Again, this leaves the individuals having to hide their true nature
and stay locked in a body and life that they are not comfortable in. I feel
that child abuse falls under this category as well. Victims of abuse are unable
to be true children and often the word of an adult is taken over theirs in any
matter. Children who are abused often have
no rights to express themselves or to be truly free and in some countries, can
remain literally locked away in abusive situations for their whole lives.
My proposition is that I make a
triptych depicting these three cultures and their persecuted individuals (see
sketch below). I plan on using the visual style of Banksy and imagery
reminiscent of the Punk era. Banksy is
an unidentified artist because if he/she were identified he/she would be
incarcerated because their work is graffiti; which in the eyes of the law is
vandalism. Banksy’s work is also controversial as it often depicts global
issues that a lot of people do not agree with. The punk imagery will be similar
to the Sex Pistols artwork for ‘God Save The Queen’. I feel that both the punk
aesthetic and the use of graffiti art like Banksy’s is relevant as both styles
are visually appealing and also relate back to the themes of freedom of
expression and incarceration.
